Thomas Meyer (political scientist)

Thomas Meyer ( * 1943) is professor emeritus of political science at the Technical University of Dortmund.

Life

Thomas Meyer studied philosophy, political science and German literature at the University of Frankfurt. In 1973 he completed his doctorate there on the topic The conflict in the Marxian emancipation theory: study of the role of the proletarian subject. His habilitation was in 1977 at the Free University of Berlin.

Meyer is a well-known critic of the influence of modern media on the style and content of today's politics. He is a member of the SPD and works as a Deputy Chairman of the Commission on Basic Values ​​of the party. He is co-editor and since 2008 chief editor of the magazine New Society Frankfurter books. He also serves on the faculty of the Academy for Social Democracy of the Friedrich -Ebert -Stiftung. His research focuses on social democracy, cultural foundations of politics, political communication as well as civil society and politics.
