Thomas Mun

Thomas Mun ( baptized on June 17, 1571 in London, † July 21, 1641 ) was an English merchant and economist.

Life

Mun came from a merchant family, became wealthy in the Mediterranean trade. In 1615 he became director of the British East India Company. He has authored numerous papers since 1620 on economic issues. He was the leading representative of mercantilism in England through his professional work and theoretical and journalistic work. His England 's Treasure By Foreign trade was more than a century, the "Gospel of mercantilism ".

Thesis

The ordinary means to increase our national treasure, is the foreign trade, whereby we must observe the following rule: sell annually to foreigners more than we consume of them. (positive foreign trade balance (exports > imports) as an indicator of the stock of the Treasury )
