Thomas Norton

Thomas Norton (* 1532 in London, † March 10, 1584 in Bedfordshire ) was an English poet and playwright, as well as a lawyer.

Life

Norton was born in London, educated at Cambridge and in 1555 admitted as a lawyer to the Inner Temple. In 1562 he became a member of Parliament. He participated in various political and religious controversies, spoke in his works against Catholicism and became a Crown prosecutor against Catholics. Norton is known not least as co-author of " Gordobuc ", the first written by classical model English tragedy, which he wrote in 1560 together with Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset. " Gordobuc " was first performed in 1562 and 1565 printed. His poetry appeared in " Tottel 's Miscellany " or " Songs and Sonnettes " ( 1557). In addition, Norton John Calvin " Institutes " translated ( 1561).
