Thomas of Jesus

Tome de Jesus, actually Tomé de Andrade (* 1529 in Lisbon, † April 17, 1582 in Sagena, Morocco) was a Portuguese scholar and spiritual writer and mystic.

Life

Tome de Jesus is born in 1529 in Lisbon. He came from the nobility, and went to the Augustinians. He belonged to the retinue of the Portuguese King Dom Sebastian, who was killed in 1578 in Alcacer de Quivir, and fell in Moorish captivity. He died in 1582 in Morocco.

His work " trabalhos de Jesus " ( The Passion of Jesus ) is a mystical text representing the Passion of Christ vividly. The book was published 1602-1609. It was then translated into different languages, into Latin, Spanish, English and German. The first German edition was published in 1661 under the title " Aerumnae DN Jesus Christ " in Ingolstadt at Haenlinus.
