Thomas Oppermann (academic)

Thomas Oppermann (* February 15, 1931 in Heidelberg) is a German constitutional law.

Thomas Oppermann studied from 1951 to 1956 law at the universities of Frankfurt, Lyon, Oxford and Freiburg. In 1959 he received his doctorate in Freiburg on the subject of House of Commons vote and two-party system. From 1960 to 1967 Oppermann worked in the European Department of the Federal Ministry of Economics. 1967 took place at Herbert Krüger his habilitation thesis on cultural administration rights: education, science, art at the University of Hamburg. From 1967 taught Oppermann until his retirement in 1999 Public Law and Foreign Policy at the University of Tübingen. His successor was Martin Nettesheim. Oppermann's work focuses on European law, international business law, constitutional law and education and media law.

Oppermann was awarded an honorary doctorate in Aix -en- Provence in 1978, in Piraeus in 2002. 1998 Oppermann received the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden -Wuerttemberg and 2004, the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1985 to 1989 Oppermann was chairman of the German Society of International Law. From 1991 to 1993 he was Chairman of the Association of German constitutional lawyer and from 1999 to 2002, President of the Working Group European Integration in Bonn. From 2002 to 2003 he was an advisor to Minister President Erwin Teufel at the European Constitutional Convention.
