Thomas Oppermann

Thomas Oppermann (* April 27, 1954 in Freckenhorst ) is a German politician (SPD) and since December 16, 2013 Leader of the SPD parliamentary group. He was Parliamentary Under- November 2007-December 2013 first secretary of the SPD Parliamentary Group and Chairman of the Parliamentary Control Panel and 1998-2003 in Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture.

Life

Education and work

Oppermann was born in 1954 the son of a dairy Master in Freckenhorst. After graduation in 1975 at the Goethe School Einbeck, he studied German and English at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. He refused to do military service and was from 1976 to 1978 as a volunteer in the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ASF ) operates in the U.S., where he also worked for the field and migrant workers union UFW / AFL -CIO. After his return, he began studying law at the Georg- August- University of Göttingen, where he graduated in 1983 with the first legal state exam. In the 2009 federal election campaign Oppermann was a member of the shadow cabinet of the SPD chancellor candidate Frank -Walter Steinmeier. Thomas Oppermann is always drawn as a directly elected representative of the constituency of Göttingen in the Bundestag. In the general election in 2013 it reached 40.4 per cent of the primary vote.

On December 16, 2013, he was elected by 90.81 percent of the SPD deputies to the new Chairman of the SPD Parliamentary Group.

Public offices

On 30 March 1998 Oppermann was appointed as Minister for Science and Culture in led by Prime Minister Gerhard Schröder state government of Lower Saxony. In this office he also belonged to the run by his successors Gerhard Glogowski and Sigmar Gabriel governments. After the SPD had lost its absolute majority in the regional elections in 2003, it came to form a coalition of CDU and FDP, and Oppermann resigned on 4 March 2003 from the government.

Thomas Oppermann has two daughters from his previous marriage and a daughter and a son with his current partner.
