Thomas R. Holtz Jr.

Richard Thomas Holtz Jr. ( * September 13, 1965 in Los Angeles ) is an American vertebrate paleontologist specializing in carnivorous dinosaurs and these specifically to tyrannosaurs.

Holtz grew up in Houston, studied Earth Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (Bachelor 1987) and in 1992 at Yale University doctorate ( An unusual structure of the metatarsus of Theropoda ( Archosauria, Dinosauria, Saurischia ) of the Cretaceous ). He is Senior Lecturer at the University of Maryland at College Park. He is the author or co-author of several books on dinosaurs.

It deals with the taxonomy of theropods ( which it called the method of cladistics operated ) and introduced a new classification proposals. In 1995, he led a Maniraptoriformes as a group of Coelurosauriern that the dinosaur ancestors of modern birds includes ( Maniraptora ) and contains the Ornithomimosauria. He also spoke out in 1994 for a group of Arctometatarsalia one with the group of Bullatosauria ( Ornithomimosauria and Troodontidae ) and the tyrannosaurids. This latter classification was later refuted and rejected by Holtz again. He also dealt with hunting behavior and movement of predatory dinosaurs.

Holtz also deals with effects of plate tectonics on the distribution of the dinosaurs.

Holtz was also involved in the present-day classification of the tyrannosaur in Coelurosauriern instead of the Carnosauriern.

He oversees the tyrannosaur in the Tree of Life Web Project. Holtz was a consultant to the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs.
