Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham

Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham PC ( born November 30, 1738July 20, 1786 ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Family

Thomas Robinson was a son of Thomas Robinson, 1st Baron Grantham, and his wife Frances Worsley. He married 1780 Mary Jemima ( 1757-1830 ), a daughter of Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, by whom he had two sons:

  • Thomas Philip Robinson, 2nd Earl de Grey ( 1781-1859 )
  • Frederick John Robinson, 1st Earl of Ripon ( 1782-1859 )

Career

Robinson initially attended Westminster School and then at Christ 's College, University of Cambridge trained.

He belonged since 1761 to the House of Commons as member for the electoral district of Christchurch. 1770 inherited the title when his father died and joined the House of Lords. He was from 1771 to 1779 British Ambassador to Spain, 1780-1782 President of the Board of Trade and from July 1782 to April 1783 Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom under Prime Minister William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne.
