Thomas Russell Crampton

Thomas Russell Crampton ( born August 6 1816 in Broadstairs, England, † April 19, 1888 in Westminster) was a British mechanical engineer and engineer.

Life

At the age of 18 years Crampton designed a steam-powered driving machine. From 1839 to 1844, he was assistant to Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Sir Daniel Gooch at the British Great Western Railway. 1843 Crampton had patented the Crampton locomotive named after him. This type of locomotive was in France widespread in the northern railway ( Compagnie du Nord).

1851 Crampton put the first working submarine telegraph cable from Dover to Calais. In 1852 he took over with his partner Sir Charles Fox contract " to supply the city of Berlin with running water " ( contractor was Chief of Police Carl Ludwig Friedrich von Hinckeldey ). To this end, he founded the corporation Berlin Water Works Company, and won the concession for the construction of a water pipeline and the construction of a pumping station.

1855 were Crampton's achievements of Napoleon III. honored with the appointment as an officer of the Legion of Honour. Also in 1885 Crampton was knighted.

Crampton died on 19 April 1888 at the age of 67 in London. He was buried in Kensal Green.
