Thomas Schleicher

Thomas Schleicher ( born November 21, 1972 in Salzburg, † November 2, 2001 ) was an Austrian judoka.

Biography

Thomas Schleicher began his career at JC Straßwalchen. In 1992 he won at the Junior European Championships to 71 kg. This year, Patrick Reiter won in the same weight class at the Junior World Championships and Norbert Haimberger the European title in the general class. Despite the fierce competition in the own team, he sat by at the Austrian Championships and won his first title in the men's. Schleicher established himself in the weight class up to 71 kg and won two bronze medals at the European Championships. In 1996 he competed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta ( USA), but did not manage placement. In the same year he was elected to the Salzburg Sportsman of the Year. His career ended abruptly when he was sentenced in September 1998 for drug trafficking to five years in prison. In 2001, he committed suicide in his prison cell suicide.
