Thomas Smith (Pennsylvania judge)

Thomas Smith ( * 1745, † March 31, 1809 in Philadelphia ) was an American lawyer and politician of the state of Pennsylvania.

Life

Born in Scotland, Smith attended the University of Edinburgh. In 1769 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Bedford, Pennsylvania, down. 1772 Smith received his license to practice law, in 1774 he was elected justice of the peace.

After his participation in the American War of Independence in 1776, Smith was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Pennsylvania in the year. From 1776 to 1780 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Following his political activities Smith was elected judge and was last from 1794 until his death, Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of Pennsylvania.
