Thomas Sydenham

Thomas Sydenham (also Syndenham ) ( born September 10, 1624 Wynford Eagle in Dorchester, Dorset, † December 29, 1689 in London) was an English physician. It is also referred to as " English Hippocrates ".

Life and work

Sydenham put among other things a number of classical descriptions of infectious diseases before - including chorea for the first time in 1686 he described and named after him - and was also involved in neurological and psychiatric diseases such as epilepsy and hysteria.

1660 and 1664 a measles epidemic was raging in London. Sydenham excluded from the measles outbreak as fever and infectious disease, as it is essentially the delineation of fever diseases ( scarlet fever or scarlatina febris, gangrene ) contributed.

In 1666 he published his major work Methodius curandi Febres. From the 3rd edition of 1676 was published under the title Observationes medicae. In his work of 1683 he distinguished for the first time between rheumatism and gout.
