Thomas van Erpe

Thomas Erpenius ( Latinized van Erpen; * September 11, 1584 in Gorinchem, † November 13, 1624 in Leiden ) was a Dutch theologian and orientalist.

Life

Erpenius studied at the University of Leiden theology, then devoted himself to the study of Oriental languages ​​, traveled to England, France, Italy and Germany, returned in 1612 returned to his native country and was in Leiden professor of oriental languages ​​and interpreters in the States-General. He built an Arabic printing, which was sold after his death by his widow Jacomine Buyes to the brothers Bonaventure and Abraham Elsevir, and their business incorporated under the name of " Oriental print " remained.

His successor as professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Leiden in 1625 was his student Jacobus Golius ( 1596-1667 ).
