Thomas von Nathusius

Thomas Engelhard of Nathusius (* September 24 1866 in Althaldensleben; † August 18, 1904 in Stettin) was a German landscape and animal painter.

Youth and Education

Nathusius was the youngest son of the chief administrative officer and manor owner Heinrich von Nathusius and his wife Louise, née Behmer. His grandfather was a wealthy merchant and factory owner Johann Gottlob Nathusius, and a first cousin, the portrait painter Susanne von Nathusius.

His youth was spent on his father's manor Althaldensleben, where he was first taught by private tutors. He made his Abitur at the boarding school Roßleben. There followed a period of military service was one year old.

From 1886 Nathusius studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Academy of Fine Arts. With a break in the years 1888 and 1889 he was there until 1892.

Professional life

As a painter, he concentrated on realistic representations of animals, especially of horses. Several times he worked with his brother Simon of Nathusius, an animal breeding professor at the University of Halle (Saale ), together with the various imaging whose works.

On July 9, 1895 Nathusius married a niece of the second degree, the author Annemarie of Nathusius. The marriage remained childless and ended in divorce shortly before his death.

Nathusius died 1904 in Bethany Deaconess Hospital in Szczecin a severe illness from which he had suffered since 1900. His grave is located on the Nathusius'schen family cemetery in Althaldensleben.
