Thomas Wassberg

Lars Thomas Wassberg ( born March 27, 1956 in Lennartsfors ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier.

Life and career

Wassberg was one of the best skiers in the 1980s. He won at the Olympic Winter Games in 1980 over 15 km of the gold medal. In 1984, he won the gold medal in the 50 km and with the Swedish squadron. In his last Olympic participation in 1988 came yet another relay gold medal added. To this end he has ever been world champions once about 30 kilometers and 50 kilometers. 1980 Wassberg leaned from it, to be honored with the prestigious Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal - to protest against an earlier decision of the prize committee. In the same year he received the Holmenkollen medal.

In his Olympic victory in 1980 over 15 kilometers, it was opposite the Finn Juha Mieto with a hundredth of a second front. After this scarcest of all possible decisions, the timing for future cross-country race was converted to tenths of a second. A proposal Wassbergs to share the gold medal, found no support for the IOC.

In the Cross Country World Cup Wassberg won six races, moreover, he was second eight times and third four times. His best results overall in 1977 were the first place and second place in the years 1982, 1984 and 1987.
