Thomas Wentworth Higginson

Thomas Wentworth Higginson ( born December 22, 1823 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, † May 9, 1911 ) was an American writer and abolitionist.

Life

Higginson studied at Harvard University, then theology at Harvard Divinity School. Then he held a preacher of the Unitarians in Newburyport, which he gave up in 1850, to join the abolitionist movement. From 1852 to 1858 he worked as a clergyman in Worcester.

In 1850 he ran as a member of the Free Soil party for a seat in the U.S. Congress. In 1853 he was indicted in Boston along with the well-known abolitionist Wendell Phillips and Theodore Parker for the support of the escaped slave Anthony Burns. He sat down in 1854 against the Kansas - Nebraska Act one, which provided to establish the Kansas and Nebraska, where the population is allowed to decide on the question of slavery should.
