Thomas Wentworth Higginson
Thomas Wentworth Higginson ( born December 22, 1823 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, † May 9, 1911 ) was an American writer and abolitionist.
Life
Higginson studied at Harvard University, then theology at Harvard Divinity School. Then he held a preacher of the Unitarians in Newburyport, which he gave up in 1850, to join the abolitionist movement. From 1852 to 1858 he worked as a clergyman in Worcester.
In 1850 he ran as a member of the Free Soil party for a seat in the U.S. Congress. In 1853 he was indicted in Boston along with the well-known abolitionist Wendell Phillips and Theodore Parker for the support of the escaped slave Anthony Burns. He sat down in 1854 against the Kansas - Nebraska Act one, which provided to establish the Kansas and Nebraska, where the population is allowed to decide on the question of slavery should.
After the outbreak of the American Civil War, he became a captain in the Union Army in Kansas, in 1862 Colonel of the first regiment composed of black (see also Buffalo Soldier ). Higginson had as a result of an injury in 1863 to resign and settled in Newport, Rhode Iceland, where he made a name as a writer. He is the editor of the poems of Emily Dickinson and was the first collector of African-American spirituals.
