Thomas Wiegand

Thomas Wiegand ( born May 6, 1970 in Wismar ) is a German electrical engineer. He was involved in the development of H.264/MPEG-AVC- and H.265/MPEG-HEVC-Videocodierstandards. Thomas Wiegand is / was one of the leaders of the standardization bodies ITU- T Video Coding Experts Group ( VCEG ) and ISO / IEC Moving Picture Experts Group ( MPEG) video and wrote the 280 -page H.264/MPEG-AVC-Spezifikation as editor. In addition, he has contributed more than 100 standardization proposals for technical content of H.264/MPEG-AVC- and H.265/MPEG-HEVC-Videocodierstandards.

Life

Instead of studying learned Thomas Wiegand at the time of the GDR only electrician because he did not like to go for a degree mandatory for three years NVA. Then he began to study electrical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Wismar and moved in 1991 after his bachelor's degree at the Technical University of Hamburg -Harburg, where he earned his degree in 1995 with a diploma. During his studies he was a visiting scholar at the University of Kobe 1993-1994 and the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1995. During the stay at the University of California, he began his work on video coding and transmission. He then became a research associate at the Institute for Communications Engineering at the Friedrich -Alexander- University of Erlangen -Nuremberg and received his doctorate in 2000. During his PhD from 1997 to 1998 he was a visiting scholar and from 2011-2012 he worked as a visiting professor at Stanford University.

Since 2008, Wiegand is a professor at the Technical University of Berlin, where he heads the Department of Image Communication. He shall also, together with Martin Schell, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. From 2008-2013, he led, together with Dr. Ralf Schäfer Image Processing Department at the Heinrich Hertz Institute. From 2000-2008, he led the group video communication at the Heinrich Hertz Institute. His research interests are in the areas of:

  • Processing, encoding and transmitting video signals,
  • Semantic in images and videos
  • Representation, coding and transmission of 3D worlds

In 2000, Wiegand in 2001 was appointed head of the JVT and in 2005 become one of the leaders of MPEG video to one of the conductors of VCEG, a year. In 2006, his co-supervision of the ITU-T part of the JPEG standardization has been transferred.

Wiegand has made a number of scientific contributions to video coding and other topics, and has a large number of proposals for the standardization of video coding in the ITU- T Video Coding Experts Group (ITU- T SG 16 Q.6: VCEG ), ISO / IEC Moving Pictures Experts Group (ISO / IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 - MPEG) and contributed to the standardization of video transmission for 3GPP and DVB.
