Thomas Wyttenbach

Thomas Wyttenbach (* 1472 in Biel, † 1526, after 21 September, ibid ) is considered a reformer of the city of Biel.

Wyttenbach studied in the years 1496-1504, the liberal arts and theology at the University of Tübingen, 1498 Baccaleureus, 1500 MA, 1504 Baccalaureus biblicus. In 1505 he moved to the University of Basel, where he worked as Sententiarius. Among his students was one among others Ulrich Zwingli and Leo Jud. 1507 he was appointed pastor of the City Church in Biel. Daaneben he continued his studies and was in 1515 received his doctorate in theology. In the years 1515-1520 he was Canons ( custodian ) of St. Vinzentenstifts in Bern, without thereby giving up his office in Biel. From 1520 onwards he worked until his death back in Biel. From a letter of reply to Zwingli Wyttenbach from June 15, 1523 stating that he rejected the doctrine of transubstantiation. Wyttenbach married in the summer of 1524 (name of wife unknown), which is why he was removed from his sinecure at the town church. But he continued to preach in the church of St. John Bieler Coming and fought to the end of his life to claim that was available to him in his opinion.
