Thomas Zehetmair ( born November 23, 1961 in Salzburg) is an Austrian violinist and conductor.

Biography

Zehetmair studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and took master classes with Franz Samohyl, Max Rostal and Nathan Milstein. In 1977 he made ​​his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1978, he won first prize at the International Mozart Competition of the Salzburg Mozarteum and the following year he made his debut at the Vienna Musikverein.

The Soloist

In addition to works of the Classical-Romantic violin repertoire Zehetmair also deals extensively with compositions of contemporary music. Among the songs that He premiered include violin concertos by James Dillon and Hans- Jürgen von Bose and the violin concerto dedicated to him by Heinz Holliger. The conductor

For over twenty years Thomas Zehetmair is also available on the conductor's podium international orchestras and was also a guest conductor of the Camerata Academica Salzburg, the Hungarian National Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Since 2002 he has held the post of chief conductor of the Northern Sinfonia in England and is Artistic Partner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in the USA. In summer 2011, Thomas Zehetmair gave his conductor's debut at the Salzburg Festival. From the season 2012/2013 on, he will hold the position of principal conductor of the Orchestre de chambre de Paris.

The chamber musician

As an active chamber musician Thomas Zehetmair is also working with various chamber music ensembles, including as a partner of Alfred Brendel and Heinrich Schiff. In 1994 he founded his own ensemble, the Zehetmair Quartet, which has now established itself in the world's top string quartets. Among the highlights of which include a series of concerts at the Wigmore Hall (2007/2008), in which the ensemble aufführte all Schumanesque string quartets, the world premiere of Heinz Holliger's String Quartet No. 2 in the Kölner Philharmonie (2008) and a concert in New York on the occasion of the celebrations Elliott Carter's 100th birthday (April 2009). The recordings of the Zehetmair Quartet Bartók, Hartmann's and Schumann's works have won awards also.

Among the recently published recordings include Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Violin Concerto with the WDR Symphony Orchestra under Heinz Holliger line ( Diapason d'Or de l' Année ), the 24 Paganini Caprices ( leaderboard prize of the German Record Critics' Midem Classic Award 2010), and Mozart's Violin Concertos with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Frans Brüggen, which are called reference images. Furthermore, the recording of Manto and Madrigals published by ECM in March 2011, take on the Thomas Zehetmair and his duo partner Ruth Killius a journey through the modern and contemporary repertoire for violin and viola. Awards

For the recording of the violin concertos by Karol Szymanowski with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle line Thomas Zehetmair 1997 received a Gramophone Award. Two other Gramophone Awards followed with Schumann's string quartets with the Zehetmair Quartet (2003, Record of the Year ) and Elgar's Violin Concerto with the Hallé Orchestra under Mark Elder (2010). 2005 Thomas Zehetmair received for his versatile artistic work as a soloist, conductor and chamber musician, the certificate of honor of the Prize of the German Record Critics. 2007 awarded him the province of Styria from the Karl Böhm Interpretation Prize. Furthermore him an honorary doctorate from the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar was awarded.
