Thomond

Thomond ( Irish: Tuadhmhumhain what North Munster means, and today Tuamhain is written ) was a historical kingdom in Ireland that existed from 1118 to 1543. It included the territory of modern County Clare, County Limerick, and the northern part of County Kerry and Tipperary.

Today, the name Thomond by many institutions and organizations is used. The Thomond College of Education, Limerick was a teacher training college, which was later merged with the University of Limerick. Thomond Park Rugby Stadium, which is used by the Munster Rugby team. In Clarecastle hot the old barracks Thomond Villas. The Thomond Bridge was for centuries the only bridge in Limerick on the River Shannon. The road that crosses this bridge leads through an area called Thomondgate today.

1543 ended the Kingdom, Murrough O'Brien, the last King of Thomond, recognized Henry VIII of England as a feudal lord and became the 1st Earl of Thomond in the Peerage of Ireland. The Earldom (county) Thomond ended with the death of Henry O'Brien, 8th Earl of Thomond in 1741. It was a new creation of the title in 1756, which in 1774 finally extinguished with the death of the carrier Percy Wyndham O'Brien.
