Thonmi Sambhota

Thonmi Sambhota is considered the inventor of the Tibetan script in the 7th century. In Tibetan texts from his period of life, he is not mentioned. Probably he actually lived the late 8th and early 9th century, when the Mahāvyutpatti arose.

Sambhota was a legendary minister of Songtsen Gampo, and was by him on a mission to North India (probably the present-day Kashmir ) sent to collect information about Buddhism. Then the minister allegedly invented a font for the Tibetan language, which is based on the Gupta script based on current knowledge. He wrote a grammar of the Tibetan language is inspired by traditional Sanskrit grammars, but consists mainly of spelling rules. His most important works are the sum cu pa ( "Thirty Verses" ) and the rtags ' jug ( "Introduction to the mark "). After bka ' chems ka khol ma ( "pillars Testament" ) from the 11th century, the oldest plant, which ascribes the invention of writing, he is the letters ཅ have invented ཆ, ཇ, ཞ and འ to Tibetan lute to that had no equivalent in Indian writing.
