Thornton is a city in Adams County and with 118 772 inhabitants (as of 2010) is the sixth largest city in the U.S. state of Colorado. The geographic coordinates are: 39.89 ° N, 104.96 ° West. The catchment area of the city is 70.4 km ².

History

On February 19, 1953, the founding of the city was proclaimed, named after the then Governor Dan Thornton. On 31 January 1954, the first 40 families moved into the new houses. The first shopping center opened in May 1955. On May 26, 1956 Thornton received the stature as City and had 8,640 inhabitants.
