Thornton (Lancashire)

Thornton ( known together with the neighboring village of Cleveleys Thornton- Cleveleys as ) is a village in the Fylde in Lancashire, North West England and is located about six kilometers north of Blackpool and two miles south of Fleetwood. It is located in the Borough of Wyre. The two villages Thornton Cleveleys and are linked by Victoria Road.

History

Thornton was first mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, there under the name Torentum. In order for a large sparsely populated area was meant to be in the today Cleveleys and Fleetwood. It is assumed that since the Iron Age at the point a settlement has existed; a Roman road passes very close to the village. The area remained weak inhabited until 1799, only the marshes were drained to the village and agriculture could be used to a greater extent.

The railway station was put into operation in 1865 in Thornton. The opening of a salt mine in the nearby Burn Naze by the United Alkali Company introduced at the beginning of the 1890s to a significant expansion of the village; new houses and municipal buildings were erected. Thornton in 1900 to an Urban District Council, which existed until 1974, when Thornton was incorporated in the Wyre Borough Council.

Traffic

The station was originally the most important stopover on the Fleetwood Branch Line of the LMS / BR London Midland Region Railway, which comes from Poulton- le -Fylde, but the station is out of service for years. However, a citizens' initiative in Poulton trying to fund a feasibility study to consider a re-commissioning of rail transport by Thornton and Fleetwood.

Structures

Built 1794 Marsh Mill, a large, well - preserved tower windmill, is a widely visible landmark. Its construction was commissioned by Bold Hesketh, the uncle of Peter Hesketh, who later played a significant role in the expansion of Fleetwood.

In Thornton, there are several schools: Baines Endowed Primary School, Thornton Primary School, Stanah County Primary School, Royles Brook Primary School and Millfield Science and Performing Arts College. There is also a small public library.
