Three Forks is a city in the United States, in the U.S. state of Montana. The village lies at the point where the Missouri Headwaters State Park merge the two headwaters of the Missouri River ( Jefferson River and Madison River).

Three Forks had inhabitants in 2000 1728 and occupies an area of 3.4 km ². The next larger town is Bozeman is located about 45 km south-east.

History

1805 explored the Lewis and Clark expedition, the headwaters of the Missouri, moved around in the Indian tribes for centuries. In 1810, 32 men of the Missouri Fur Company established a fur trading post at Three Forks. Among them were John Colter, who had already visited two years earlier as a trapper and the region was captured by the Blackfoot Indians, and George Drouillard. The trading post was abandoned again due to attacks by Indians and grizzly bears.

In subsequent years, more trappers roamed the region, including Jim Bridger and Kit Carson. Father DeSmet began his missionary work in 1840 at the Absarokee and Flathead Indians. From 1862 several settlements were established in the area.

Three Forks was 1908, when the railway company Milwaukee Railroad built its rail line to the Pacific.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,728 people in Three Forks; there were counted 686 households and 469 families. The population density was 525 inhabitants per km ². It 726 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 97.6 % White, 1.1 % Native American, 0.2 % Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.4 % from other ethnic groups; 0.6 % stated that the lineage of several ethnicities. 1.3 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 686 households out of which 35.4 % have children living with them. 59.3 % were married couples living together, 5.8 % had a female householder with no husband, and 31.5% were non-families. 26.7 % of all households are made up and 12.1% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size 3.08.

The population was spread out with 28.4 % under the age of 18, 6.0 % from 18 to 24, 28.9 % 25-44 years, 21.8 % from 45 to 64 years and 15.0 % of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.6 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 34 212, and the median income for a family $ 39,938. Males have a median income of $ 30,086, women $ 19,196. The per capita income was $ 15,362. Under the poverty line 5.5 % of families and 7.7 % of the population, including 6.6% of the population under the age of 18 and 6.7 % of the population lived at the age of 65 years or older.
