Three Holy Hierarchs

The term generally refers to a hierarch " religious authorities ", but not a specific rank within the church hierarchy.

The term hierarch is now gone from the general German vocabulary. While from 1894 still shows up in the Brockhaus edition, he is no longer listed there today. In the Orthodox Church the term is still in use and referred to a church dignitary of a specific area, the ecclesiastical jurisdiction. In the Latin Church it corresponds to the Ordinary.

The Orthodox Church celebrates on January 30, the feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs. These three saints are the Greek Orthodox faith community as a patron of education, which is why the Feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs in Greece is also a school and university holidays.
