Thrissur district

The Thrissur District ( Malayalam: തൃശ്ശൂര് ജില്ല, formerly Trichur ) is a district in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Council is based in the eponymous city of Thrissur.

Geography

The Thrissur District is located on the Malabar coast in Zentralkerala. It is bordered to the west by the Arabian Sea, to the north by the district of Malappuram in the north, on the northeast by the Palakkad District, on the east by the neighboring federal state of Tamil Nadu (District Coimbatore ), to the southeast by the Idukki District and on the south by the district of Ernakulam.

The area of the district of Thrissur has an area of ​​3,032 square kilometers and extends from the coast in the west to the mountains of the Western Ghats bishin in the east. It is divided into five taluks Chavakkad, Talappilly, Thrissur, Kodungallur and Mukundapuram.

History

During the British colonial period was one of the largest part of today's district area to the nominally independent princely state of Cochin. The coastal area of the district, however, was part of the district of Malabar province of British India Madras. Culture and sights

The main attraction of the city of Thrissur is the Hindu god Shiva consecrated Vadakkunathan Temple, one of the biggest and oldest Hindu temples of Kerala. Once a year in Thrissur Thrissur Pooram, a magnificent temple festival is held in the center of which a procession of more than 50 festively decorated temple elephant is standing. The festival annually attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, including many Western tourists.

About 30 kilometers west of Thrissur in the small town Cheruthuruthy is the Academy of Fine Arts Kerala Kalamandalam. This institution was founded in 1930 is the main center for traditional Keralite and Indian performing arts like Kathakali, Kutiyattam or Bharata Natyam.
