Government

Thula (also: Tula, TILA; Arab ثلاء, DMG Tula ʾ ) is a small town in the central west of Yemen. The city is located halfway between the twin city of Shibam Kaukaban in the south and ʿ Amrān in the north, in the homonymous province ʿ Amrān, each removed just over 10 miles and lies at an altitude of approximately 2800 m. The capital Sanaa is located about 50 km south-east. The County Thula has a population of 45 349 inhabitants.

Urban culture

Thula is considered to be a very nice place, built almost entirely of stone houses. This sometimes five stories high. Since regularly were quarries in the immediate area, the stones could now be procured. Often the quarries served - as for example in at- Tawila - even as construction sites. Mortar was not used as a binder. Walls, window frames and doors were elaborately decorated. The medieval town is enclosed by a stone city walls and the wooden medieval city gates still exist. Within the walls of the city is home to underground water tank ( cistern ), which are especially found in the nearby village Hababah, an imam from the 16th century, which is used as Funduk, a city wall from the 17th century and a mosque from 14. century. Similar to Shibam Kaukaban also Thula has a Castle Hill. However, the fort is uninhabited.

Along with Shibam Kaukaban was Thula capital of Yu ʿ firiden ( 7 / 8th century ) and to the beginning of Islam, escape the imams in the 16th century during the first Ottoman conquest.
