Thumelicus

Thumelicus (* 15; † before 47 ) was the son of Arminius and the Thusnelda.

Life

Arminius, the son of Cheruskergaugrafen Segimer lived since the autumn / winter 14 or spring 15 with Thusnelda, daughter of romfreundlichen Cheruskergaugrafen Segestes. The pregnant Thusnelda was handed over to the Roman general Germanicus, in the year 15 by her father Segestes. In the triumph of Germanicus on May 26, 17 Thusnelda and Thumelicus were presented to the people of Rome as war booty; Thusnelda Segestes father is said to have been present as an ally of Rome, the spectacle. Because of the strategic alliance between Rome and Segestes Thusnelda and her son Thumelicus were, contrary to the usual procedure, not killed after completion of the triumphal procession, but sent to Ravenna into exile.

The further life of Thumelicus lies hidden in the mists of history. Tacitus speaks in hints: " The boy grew up in Ravenna. From the game that has the fate driven with him later, I will report in due course. "The announcement of his report, however, is missing or has perhaps never written. Because of this Tacituszitates and the fact that Thumelicus in Ravenna, a city grew up with a famous gladiator school, is sometimes assumed that Tacitus with "game" the gladiator fights meant and thus Thumelicus ended his life in an exhibition match in Circus. However, this interpretation is not directly verifiable.

Thumelicus, while his mother's captivity was born, was named after his mother stabreimend Thusnelda and with a Roman name - not after the Germanic father and Romans enemy, as if this unknown.
