The Thurniaceae are a family of plants that belongs to the Süßgrasartigen ( Poales ). The types of Thurniaceae a disjunct distribution with areas in moist areas on the one hand in the Neotropical region in northeastern Brazil and Guyana, and on the other in the Capensis.

Description

The types of Thurniaceae are big, strong, perennial herbaceous plants with rhizomes. The alternate, at the plant-based concentrates ( basal ), three to four lines arranged leaves are simple, sessile, leathery, parallel-veined and entire or cut short.

In capitate inflorescences many flowers are crowded together; there may be one or more flower heads are on a stalk. The small, hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. There are six equally protean, membranous bracts present. There are two circles, each with three fertile stamens; they are always with each other freely, but they can be fused with the bloom cladding in some species. Three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. It is a short style with three scars present. Pollination is by wind ( anemophily ). There shall be three -edged fruit capsules, each containing only three seeds that are hairy and winged.

There are only one or two genera with about three to five species in the family of Thurniaceae:
