Thyra (river)

The Thyra in Berga

The Thyra is a 20 km long river in the district of Mansfeld- South Harz.

Course

The Thyra arises in the old town of Stolberg in the Harz Mountains at the confluence of three mountain streams Large Wild, Wild Small and Lude and then flows through Stolberg, where some creeks open out, then runs south through a steep valley to Rottleberode. Here the Thyratal is very wide, with Uftrungen it thickens but again. South of Uftrungen takes the Thyra from the resin of the Goldene Aue, there are Bösenrode and Hill crossed, then flows into the river in the helmets.

Etymology

The name is due to the basic form Duria. This Illyrian word is the basic form of many southern European rivers and can be traced back to the Indo-European dheu form. This means running or run.

Special

After Thyra multiple objects are named, such as the water park Thyragrotte in Stolberg, or the railway line Thyraliesel.
