Tiananmen Square

The place ( outside the gate ) Tiananmen or Tian'anmen Square (Chinese天安门广场/天安门广场, Pinyin Tian'anmen Guǎngchǎng ) is a square in the center of Beijing ( People's Republic of China). He is often referred to with its 39.6 hectares, the largest fortified place in the world. On the north side is the Tian'anmen, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, behind which is followed by the Forbidden City. By 1911, the place was not open to the public. From 1911 he was an important demonstration plant with a capacity of up to one million people.

In the square, the Monument to the People's Heroes stands in the struggle for liberation. The square is bounded on the west by the Great Hall of the People and to the east by the National Museum of China.

After Mao Zedong's death in 1976, a massive mausoleum was built on the southern part of the square, where since the conserved body of the "Great Helmsman " is issued.

Events

  • May 4, 1919: Fourth Movement May China was in the Versailles Treaty, the sovereignty over the former German leasehold areas in Shandong Province not return. Rather, the region was placed under a Japanese protectorate. In contrast, demonstrated on the Tiananmen Square over 3,000 students.
  • April 4, 1976: Tiananmen incident. On All Souls' Day, the Chinese population had brought wreaths and flowers on the Tian'anmen Square in honor of the popular, recently deceased Prime Minister Zhou Enlai. Due to intra-party disputes the discarded wreaths and flowers were removed at night by security forces, while thousands protested the following day. This peaceful demonstration was broken up by police and military force.
  • June 4, 1989: The Tiananmen Square Massacre, the bloody endpoint of months of protests of the Chinese democracy movement on Tiananmen Square, as a result, depending on the estimates between 300 and 3000 people were killed. (Red Cross: 2700)
