Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station

The pumped storage power plant Tianhuangping is a pump storage power plant in Tianhuangping, Anji county in Zhejiang province, China. The power plant has an installed capacity of 1836 megawatts and uses six reversible Francis turbines. Construction began in 1993 and in 2004 the power plant was ready for operation. It is one of the largest pumped-storage power plants in Asia; currently it is the fifth largest in terms of performance.

Operation

Tianhuangping Dam ( lower basin )

The Tianhuangping Dam in CFRD construction dams the Daxi Bach on the lower basin. The reservoir has a usable space of 6.77 million m³. There is an uncontrolled side overflow as spillway, which is designed for a discharge of 536 m³ / s.

Upper basin

From the lower reservoir the water is pumped into the upper reservoir, which has a usable space of 6,760,000 m³. It has been artificially cut into the mountain and created with the help of four saddle dams. When electricity is generated, the water flows through three long pressure pipes 882 m with 7 m diameter down to the power plant, which is above the lower reservoir. Before the water reaches the pump turbines, it is divided into six branch pipes.

Power station

The six branch pipes supplying the six turbines with headrace. Each Francis turbine has 306 MW of installed capacity and 336 MW maximum power. The turbines and generators are in an underground power station with dimensions: 198.7 m long, 21 m wide and 47.7 m high. After power has been generated, the water is drained into the lower reservoir, and the whole process may start again.
