Tiaret

Province

Tiaret (Arabic تيارت, DMG Tiyārat, also Tihert, Tahert or Tehert ) is the capital of the province of Tiaret in Algeria. It is considered a traditional trade center and has its own university.

History

Already in Roman times there was a Roman stronghold in this place, which was called Tingurtia.

Between 788 and 909 was Tiaret seat of the Imami Rustamiden and a thriving center of the trans-Saharan trade. The historic settlement was, however, 9 km west of present-day Tiaret. The place had abundant water sources and was protected by its natural setting and a city wall with four gates.

Modern

1863 modern Tiaret was founded. The city is now one of about 201,000 inhabitants, of which more than 99 % are Muslims, and covers an area of approximately 300 km ². It is located about 250 km south-west of Algiers, at the intersection of National Highway 14 and National Highway 23
