Tiberius Gemellus

Tiberius Julius Caesar Nero ( * 19, † 37 or 38 ), called Tiberius Gemellus, was a younger son of Drusus and the Livilla and thus a grandson of Tiberius and Caligula's cousin. Gemellus ( "twin" ), he was called because he had a twin brother, Tiberius, Germanicus Caesar, who died as a child.

His father Drusus died under mysterious circumstances, as Gemellus was four years old. It is believed that he perished at the instigation of the praetorian prefect Sejanus. His mother Livilla was killed because she had planned with the fall of Sejanus, Tiberius and because she was suspected of having poisoned her husband.

Not much is known about the life of Gemellus because it was largely ignored by the imperial family. To a large extent, that one of the main stages of his youth, the awarding of the toga virilis, was celebrated only at the age of 18 years - the usual age for this is 14

At the age of twelve years Gemellus was launched together with his cousin Caligula on the island of Capri, where Tiberius lived. Tiberius made both to joint heirs, but it was clear that Tiberius Caligula over his own grandson preferred. Livilla was at the time of Gemellus ' birth Sejanus lover and it is therefore assumed that Gemellus was actually the son of the Praetorian.

Tiberius died on March 16, 37 and Caligula became emperor. A short time he made Gemellus to his adopted son, a gesture that did not last long. At Caligula 's orders Gemellus was killed late 37 or early 38, because he was suspected to have exploited a disease of the Emperor in order to conspire against him.

About Gemellus little information has been written down, most of it is related to material about Caligula.
