Tibetan Welfare Office

The Tibetan Settlement Office (TSO ) ( previously " Tibetian Welfare Office " ) operates under the supervision of the Tibetan Ministry of Interior and is part of the central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India. The T.S.O. organized projects in the social, cultural and economic fields. Furthermore, is the awareness of environmental issues and sustainable development in the foreground.

Waste disposal

The "Clean Upper Dharamsala " project was created in 1994 by the TSO starts. The goal is to solve the garbage problem in Upper Dharamsala, the tapering due to the increase of non-biodegradable products in the area.

At the beginning of the program consisted of three "Green Workers ", the recyclable material from households and firms in McLeod Ganj einsammelten. The program had gone through the installation of five dust bins and the removal of waste by a truck a big impact. These efforts have contributed visible to a cleaner environment.

Further public toilets have been built. These are held in state, a drainage system has been installed in the area around McLeod Ganj and the Dal Lake to prevent water pollution.

Recycling

Recyclable material is collected either from door to door ( Green Workers ) or it is discharged.

Currently is recycled:

  • Soft plastic ( plastic bags )
  • Hard Plastic ( bucket, tape, pens, packaging)
  • Glass bottles and jars, glass shards
  • Carton
  • Old clothes and shoes
  • Tin and other metal

The recycled material is sold to a purchaser directly in Dharamsala or to Pathankot ( 80 km away ) either. The transport of material to Pathankot is not cost effective.

To encourage participation in the program, all forms of plastic, metal, glass, clothing and paper are collected together. This material is then separated into various categories. About two-thirds of the collected material can be reused.

Paper mill

The T.S.O. has a small paper workshop set up in Upper Dharamsala, are produced in hand -made products. The pieces of paper are torn into small pieces and soaked for four to five hours. The soaking results in a uniform distribution of the paper, thus creating a finer mass and thicker paper. The mass may be added to the environmentally friendly chemicals for durability and tensile strength is then pressed, dried and smoothed. The smooth paper is brought to the next workshop where products are made from it.

The Green Store

"The Green Store " was opened in 1994 and is oriented to the environmental business. You can buy goods and dispose of used batteries and expired medicine.

Is sold, among other things:

  • Clean water
  • Paper products that are made in the paper workshop
  • Bags made ​​of cloth, they reduce the use of plastic bags
  • Chemical-free shampoo and conditioner
  • Soaps and creams
  • Tibetan tea

Social Commitment

The Tibetan Settlement Office is actively integrated into society. Its role is to assess the needs of the community and to find solutions. For example, the situation of young people and older population is alarming. It must fund be created to enable young people to get an education and to ensure the survival of the older generation.

The staff of the T.S.O. is also formed in the legal advice and can mediate in conflicts in the community. One of the main objectives of the T.S.O. is to obtain social, religious and political harmony in the community. This is ensured by already working out small conflicts and problems.

The T.S.O. has also established the " Gaddi Women 's Self -Help Society ". This is a project run by and for Indian women.
