Ticino League

The Lega dei Ticinesi ( German League of Ticino, French Ligue des Tessinois ) is a political party in Switzerland. It was founded in 1991 as a right-hand or right-wing populist protest party and is active exclusively in the canton of Ticino.

History

The party was founded by entrepreneur and former FDP - partisan Giuliano Bignasca and the journalist Flavio Maspoli. Founded in January 1991, they managed to occupy with Flavio and Marco Maspoli Borradori two of Representatives seats and one Senate seat with Giorgio Morniroli.

The Lega is against joining the European Union and for a strict asylum policy. A particular annoyance for the party are federal employees in Bern, allegedly committed to not enough for the interests of the canton of Ticino. After an initial rapid success in the home canton the ascent slowed. In the national parliament, the party is represented by Norman Gobbi as a member of the SVP Group.

The Lega was able to keep her seat in the Council of State in the Ticino cantonal elections in 2003, thanks to the popular among the population Marco Borradori. On the occasion of the State Council elections from 1 April 2007 reached Marco Borradori with more than 81,000 votes, the best result of all candidates. Even when the State Council elections on April 10, 2011 posted Borradori with 81'754 votes again the best result of all candidates; because the Lega moreover, the FDP ( 25.0%) for the first time replaced with 29.8 % of the vote as vote largest party, was able to move in the cantonal government with Norman Gobbi a wide Lega member.

The lower section of the party for the younger generation ( Giovani Leghisti ) is led by Francesco Lovera in Lugano.

Politically close to the Lega dei Ticinesi the Swiss People's Party, the Freedom Party of Switzerland and its Italian ( the Po ) " sister party " Lega Nord. However cherish the Ticino jurists - in large contrast to the Lega Nord - no secession.

In March 2013 Co-founder and President Giuliano Bignasca died. State Michele Barra died in October 2013.
