Tielt

Tielt is a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The city has 19,922 inhabitants ( 1 January 2012). In 1976, the villages Aarsele, Kanegem and Schuiferskapelle were incorporated.

History

1245 Tielt received its town charter by Margaret of Constantinople Opel. After building a Cloth Hall ( 1275 ), the city experienced its first heyday. 1393 led Philip II in Tielt an annual market, which gave a great boost especially the Tuchmacherzunft. 1645 burned much of the city down. Also in the first and even more so during the Second World War, many buildings were destroyed and had to be rebuilt. During the First World War, the city was on 20 October 1914 until the October 2, 1918 seat of the headquarters of the 4th Army of the German armed forces.

Attractions

  • In the city center is the 1275 -built tower " hall doors " that belongs together with the remains of the Cloth Hall and the aldermen chamber, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The present tower architecture dates from the Renaissance to 1560th Since 1773 there is a carillon of 36 bells housed.
  • The Sint- Pieterskerk has a monumental pulpit.
  • From Tielt several biking and hiking trails in the area with some windmills.
