Tiffauges

Tiffauges is a commune, with 1529 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vendée of the Pays de la Loire region.

Geography

The city lies on the banks of the Sevre Nantaise, at the confluence of the left tributary Crume.

History

Tiffauges is named after the Taifalen.

In the 11th century Tiffauges feudal estate of Thouars. Geoffroy of Thouars built the castle in the 12th century.

Catherine de Thouars married in 1420 Gilles de Rais. This boy killed at the castle and was therefore executed. Catherine de Thouars married Jean II de Vendome, vidame de Chartres.
