Tiger Balm

Tiger Balm ( English for " Tiger Balm "; Chinese:虎 标 万金油; Pinyin: hǔbiao wànjīnyóu ) is the brand name of an ointment to rub for colds, insect bites or pain in the muscles and joints.

It was in the 1870s by the druggists Aw Chu Kin (Chinese:胡子钦; Pinyin: Hu Zǐqīn ) developed in Rangoon and industrially produced after the death of the inventor from pharmaceutical companies Haw Par Healthcare, based in Singapore, which of his sons Aw Boon Aw Boon Haw and Par was founded and its best-known product is Tiger Balm. None of the products contain ingredients that come from tigers. "Tiger" is the translation of the first name " Haw". Tiger Balm is distributed in Germany by Abbey Healthcare Group.

The whitish ointment contains menthol, camphor, Cajeput oil, other essential oils, and Vaseline. In addition, a red-colored version is available, which additionally comprises a reaction product of Chinese cinnamon. The white version has a cooling effect and is suitable for example for pain relief after mosquito bites and respiratory infections. The red ointment, however, has a warming effect and is therefore suitable for example for use in tension. Tiger Balm can have a soothing effect on headaches.
