Tignes Dam

The Tignes Dam (French for " Barrage Chevril ") is a dam near the ski resort of Tignes in France in the department of Savoie. The barrage across the Isère to the " Lac du Chevril " in which in 1952 the old village of Tignes disappeared.

The dam has a 180 or 181 m high arch dam as a shut-off. At the time of its construction it was the largest arch dam in Europe. It was designed by André Coyne.

In memory of the old village of Tignes a monument on the shores of Lac du Chevril in 2003, the fiftieth anniversary of the dam, built. It shows a looking over the water young proud woman in traditional clothes. The statue was designed by Livio Benedetti and stands for " Semper Vivens " ( Latin for " always alive ").

At the dam there is a now largely faded, known under the name Giant of Tignes fresco showing Heracles.
