Tigon

Big cat hybrids are hybrids, so-called hybrids between different species of big cats, especially between members of the genus Panthera. Particularly well known are hybrids between the lion (Panthera leo) and the tiger (Panthera tigris ), a distinction being made with the Liger and the Tigon two forms. Both names are compositions from the words tiger and lion, the English word for tiger or lion. Outside the genus Panthera can be caused by crossing, for example, Pumaparden.

Overview

Intersections of a Tigons with tigers or lions is called Ti - Tigon and Li - Tigon.

A cross a tiger with a Jaguar Leopard mixture is called analogy, Ti or Ti - Lepjag Jagulep etc.

In addition, there are the following intersections among the cats:

  • Puma x leopard = Pumapard
  • Margay ( Margay ) x ocelot = Marlot
  • Bobcat Lynx x = Blynx ( Father: bobcat) / Lynxcat (father: Lynx )

Liger

Liger is the intersection product of a male lion and a female tiger.

You do not occur in the wild, because their natural habitats do not overlap, but are born in zoos and circuses. Externally, they have the stature of a lion with bright, sometimes resolved to spots a tiger's stripes, but they often show a marked deposition of fat, which is why they appear not infrequently somewhat short legs. Male Liger form occasionally from a slight mane. They are sometimes larger than their parents, because growth-inhibiting genes are passed only of the families are not involved in each case. In the males, occurs in addition by the sterility of a certain castration effect, and they lay very much weight. The liger is the largest hybrids in the cat family. It is from 3 to 3.50 m long and can achieve a weight of more than 350 kilograms. There are only a dozen.

Male ligers are sterile, but the females can breed successfully with both male lions and tigers, but the fact that offspring are not pure Liger more, but intermediate forms between a Liger and the nature of the Father.

Since 2005, it can be observed in the zoo of Novosibirsk ( Russia), a Liger. The Zoo in Grömitz ( Germany ) there were three liger. The final had to be put down in February 2008 due to old age.

Töwe

The inverted cross shape, between a male tiger and a female lion is called a Töwe or Tigon. Töwen are significantly smaller than the parents unlike Ligern; the mortality rate of fetuses is quite high.
