Tile-Engine

Tile Engine is a collective term for certain game engines of two-dimensional graphics. With the help of tiles, usually square small graphics, the playing field is composed. This can be easily described using a multi-dimensional data field, which maps the columns and rows of the grid pitch. Each value in it is then available for a particular tile. So you can have slightly different pitches and game design sections. The grid concept allows a relatively simple moving figures and collision detection. A subcategory of tile engine are the iso- engines.
