Timeline

A time line (also chronology or Timeline ) is an illustration of sequences of time periods, and events in the form of a graph or table. The temporal sequence is represented as a spatial sequence, such as are earlier events above and later below. In addition to the order ( ordinal scale ), there is also the possibility of representing time intervals by spatial distances ( interval scale): The greater the distance between two points on the bar, the greater the temporal distance between the corresponding events.

The concept of the timeline or the timeline is mostly used to a describe a graphical representation of time sequences in the form of straight line, are registered in the individual events like a number line by the line crossing markings. Periods such as an epoch are then presented as sections between two such events and possibly highlighted. In addition, this form of representation can accommodate to provide the events or periods with further text or illustrations. It is also possible to display different timelines above or next to each other. In this way, several developments can be juxtaposed that took place during the same time. An example of such a synoptic representation is Arno Peters ' "Synchronous Optical World History". There events from all over the world and all walks of life are synchronously ordered in a timeline.

Artistically designed timelines can be found on the facades of historic buildings. Such elaborate designed illustrations of historical events are also referred to as a historical frieze.

Time sheets, however, are usually representations in the form of a table, similar to a CV listing data or periods in chronological order and, if necessary, provide additional information in another column. Time charts usually start with the earliest date. However, it may also be useful, declining to represent the chronological sequence starting with the latest date. Timelines have been first used by the Encyclopedia Britannica as a means to represent individual subjects in their historical development. A similar task has removed the Chronicle, which is usually in prose form is, however, much greater detail and historical events.

In nature, also find representations of temporal sequences, such as the layering of sedimentary rock or in annual rings of trees. These represent, in a way natural timelines dar.
