Timotesubani

The Timotessubani Monastery (Georgian ტიმოთესუბანი, ტიმოთესუბნის მონასტერი ) is a medieval Georgian Orthodox monastery in Samtskhe - Javakheti region of Georgia, the Borjomi municipality in the homonymous village Timotessubani.

The complex consists of a series of several buildings that were built between the 11th and the 18th century. Of which is the main church of the monastery is the largest and most important; it was in the so -called " golden age " of the Georgian Kingdom built in the reign of Queen Tamar ( 1184-1213 ). In a contemporary inscription of the Georgian nobles Shalva of Akhaltsikhe is named as patron of the church.

The church was built of pink stone. The plan of the church has a floor plan with cross -in- square and three apses at the east side. The dome rests on two free-standing pillars and the corner of the altar. Later, two portals were grown south and west.

The interior is adorned with the latest in the 1220s with frescoes. The murals of Timotessubani are known by their vividness and complexity of the iconographic program. These frescoes were cleaned and studied in the 1970s by E. Privalova and their colleagues.
