Timothie Bright

Timothy Bright or timothy (* around 1551, † 1615) was hospital doctor and a country parson in England and developer of a Stenografiesystems.

He published in 1588 his work Characterie ( " draftsmanship " ) the first textbook for stenography in English. Bright was inspired by the Tironischen notes and secret writing. His writing is a Wortstenografie with 18 letters, consisting of a vertical rod with tabs at the top of the rod ( so-called Stabstenografie ). To obtain a greater number of characters, bars or lugs at the base of the rod were then added. Timothy Bright had influential friends. Queen Elizabeth I granted him for 15 years, the special law alone publish short written books.

That document also describes the plays of William Shakespeare were secretly recorded. The peculiarities of Bright's shorthand also explain the inconsistencies in the texts of the dramas.
