Tindouf (Arabic تندوف Tinduf ) is a city in the west of Algeria and also the capital of the province of Tindouf. In addition, the government in exile of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic has their headquarters in Tindouf

History

Tindouf was founded in 1852 by Berbers. After Algerian independence in 1962, the city grew and became significant by their proximity to the Moroccan and Mauritanian border. In the Algerian - Moroccan border war (1963-1964) claimed King Hassan II of Morocco the claims, however, in 1972 the area around Tindouf, gave up. East of Tindouf live since their expulsion in Western Sahara conflict around 116,000 Sahrawis in several refugee camps whose management the Polisario Front has taken over.
