Tingwall, Shetland

Tingwall is a place on the island of Shetland Mainland. It is located 3.5 km north of Scalloway and 6.5 km west of Lerwick.

History

The old Thingstätte for Central Mainland was on the peninsula "Law Ting Holm" in Tingwall hole. It was the seat of the Nordic Management from the Shetland Islands.

At the cemetery, which was built 1788-1790, simple St. Magnus Church, an unassuming building from the late 18th century, there are some tombs of the landed gentry. One of them was the beginning of the 20th century as the rest of the choir of the original church from the 11th century, which was provided with a round tower, identified. A grave stone reminiscent of Andrew Crawford, the architect of the Earl 's Palace in Kirkwall on Orkney. He died during construction of the Scalloway Castle in 1600.

The West Main country is rich in prehistoric sites. Cairns and the remains of ancient chapels are found in the community and many stone axes and arrowheads of flint were found.

  • John J. Graham ( 1921-2008 ).

Transport and Infrastructure

North of Tingwall Loch is the Tingwall Airport ( LWK). From there, there are flights between the islands, which are operated by the airline Direct Flight.
