Tire label

The tire label is a label for motor vehicle tires. According to the provisions of the EU Regulation on the labeling of tires Manufacturers tires for passenger cars and light and heavy commercial vehicles must enter from 1 November 2012 for each product, the fuel efficiency class, wet grip class and the class, the external rolling noise together with the corresponding measured value. For this purpose, a 75 × 110 mm marking in accordance with Annex II of the EU Regulation on the labeling of tires is to install either on a sticker on the tread of each tire or be included with each item of identical tires as a printed label (Article 4, paragraph 1 EU Regulation No 1222 / 2009).

This information must also be listed in the technical promotional material. The tire label is a classification starting with the best (green category " A") to worst performance (red category " G") use (Article 4, paragraph 3 EU Regulation No 1222 /2009).

This initiative is the result of a proposal by the EU Commission in 2008. It is part of the Action Plan for Energy Efficiency, which is to improve the efficiency of products, buildings and services, by 2020 to reduce energy consumption by 20 %. The EU has already set up a system for the marking of electrical household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and televisions, to the Europeans more aware of the amount of their energy consumption to inform (source: European Commission).

Colored scales classify the rolling resistance and wet braking. Grade A is the highest rating here.

Rolling resistance

The rolling resistance is the decisive parameter in the measurement of the energy efficiency of the tire, and thus has a direct influence on the fuel consumption of the vehicle. This basically depends on the vehicle or type of vehicle and the driving conditions. A tire with the green "A" category consumes 0.1 liters per 100 km less fuel than a "B" - classified tires.

A distinction is made between the efficiency classes A to G, where class D is not awarded. Based on an average consumption of 6.6 l/100 km, the consumption increased as follows:

Wet grip

With an average road grip, the braking distance is extended as follows:

Noise

The pass-by noise is given as an absolute value in decibels and as a three -tier system as sound waves symbol. The reference value represents the EU limit value for the maximum pass-by noise represents the black stripes of the symbol indicate compliance or below the limits:

A continuous noise above 80 decibels can cause adverse health effects.

Tire labeling

The tire label generally applies:

  • Car Tires
  • Light Truck Tires
  • Truck tires

The tire label does not apply to:

  • Retreaded tires
  • Tires not street legal, such as race tires
  • T- spare tires
  • Vintage tires
  • Motorcycle tires
  • Tires for earthmoving equipment
  • Farm tires

Information obligations

  • Provision of EU tire label as a sticker or in a separate form.
  • Provision of the tire label values in the context of product communication.
  • Information on or with the invoice.
  • Tire label must be issued on the sales floor or the end user actively been clearly visible.
  • In the case of choice of tires when purchasing a new vehicle, the assessments must be made available.
  • Detailed information on the content and format of the label
  • EU Member States must organize market surveillance and impose penalties for non-compliance.

Criticism

The newly created label informs the customer of three criteria: rolling resistance, wet grip and noise emission. However, there are many other performance factors. Among other things:

  • Aquaplaning characteristics
  • Driving stability
  • Precision of the steering
  • Life
  • Braking
  • Behavior in winter conditions

More tire label

In Japan there is a of the EU tire label similar marks. Here are two criteria, rolling resistance and wet grip, rated. The scale of the rolling resistance is divided into 5 classes ( AAA, AA, A, B, C), the wet grip into 4 classes (a, b, c, d).

The tire label in South Korea also evaluated two criteria, rolling resistance and wet grip. Both are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 ( 1 is the best).
