Tirefour Castle

The Broch of Tirefour (also called Lynn of Lorn ) is not far from Oban on the island of Lismore, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. There is a ferry from Oban to Achnacroish in the island. The Broch, which is one of the best preserved in the region is about five kilometers north- west of the harbor near the coast.

The round Broch is located on an elongated limestone ridge and has about 12.2 m in diameter. Its walls of dry masonry are down about 4.5 m thick and extend three feet, sometimes even 4.9 m. The interior is littered with the ruins of the walls. The inner wall is thinner at about 2.5 m height and forms a rotating platform of 0.6 m width. It is believed that there was a wooden platform here. Below the edge, there is a 1.0 m wide, spilled access, which led to a cell wall or stairs on the north side. The remains of the intramural gallery, which serves to improve statics of the structure can be detected up to about 2.7 m above the ground. The straight access to the Broch is located on the southwest side and is 1.4 m wide. There are outdoor plants in the Northeast and Southwest, which consist of straight across the ridge extending walls. The wall in the southwest is similar to the other and at the base three feet thick. You tapers up to 1.1 m in height. It is only in this wall, a passage which is in line with the access to the Broch.
