Tiruvallur district

The District Tiruvallur (Tamil: திருவள்ளூர் மாவட்டம், also: Thiruvallur ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center of the district is the eponymous city Tiruvallur.

Geography

The District Tiruvallur lies in the northeast of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost Indian state, on the border of the neighboring Federal State of Andhra Pradesh. Neighboring districts are Chennai in the south east, the south Kanchipuram, Vellore in South West ( all in Tamil Nadu ). Well as the belonging to Andhra Pradesh Chittoor district in the north In the east, the district of Tiruvallur share of the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.

The area of the district of Tiruvallur is 3,552 square kilometers. The area belongs mostly to the flat coastal plain of Tamil Nadu. In the north, on the border with Andhra Pradesh is the Pulicat Lake, the second largest lagoon in India. The urban area of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest city of India, across grown beyond the boundaries of the city district, so that the metropolitan region of Chennai also parts of District Tiruvallur belong. The catchment area of Chennai include the cities Ambattur, Avadi and Tiruvottiyur.

History

Forerunner of today's Tiruvallur district was the district Chengalpattu ( Chingleput ). This, the British had set up in 1788 after they acquired the reign of the Nawabs of Arcot and had the area incorporated into the province of Madras. After the Indian independence in 1956, the district was a part of the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). In 1960, the area was solved to Tiruttani from the district of Chittoor in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh and added to the District Chengalpattu. The District Tiruvallur emerged in 1997, when the district was divided into the districts of Chengalpattu Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur.

Population

According to the 2011 census of District Tiruvallur has 3,725,697 inhabitants. He is one of the most populous districts of Tamil Nadu. Its proximity to the rapidly expanding metropolis of Chennai Tiruvallur district is experiencing rapid population growth: In the period 2001-2011, the population grew by 35.2 percent. Population growth, well above the average of Tamil Nadu ( 15.6 per cent) and is also after the catchment area of Chennai, Kanchipuram district belonging to the second highest of all districts in the state. The degree of urbanization is significantly higher than the mean value of the state ( 48.5 percent). The literacy rate is 83.8 percent slightly higher than the average of Tamil Nadu ( 80.3 per cent).

According to the 2001 census, 89.9 percent of the population are Hindus addition, there are minorities of Christians ( 6.2 percent ) and Muslims (3.6 per cent).

Attractions

In the district of Tiruvallur is Tiruttani with one of six places of pilgrimage ( Arupadaividu ) of the Hindu god Murugan. According to the myth Tiruttani is the place to be Murugan withdrew after his marriage to his consort Valli. Set on a good 200 meters high cliff of Tiruttani Murugan temple is a major pilgrimage site and attracts mainly during the Adi- Krittigai festival in the Tamil month of Adi (July- August) to many of the faithful. Another important Hindu shrine is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva by Tiruvalangadu, which was sung in the 6th century by the poet anthem Karaikal Ammaiyar. In Tiruvallur - town is the Vishnu consecrated Veeraraghava - Perumal Temple.

Located on the Pulicat Lake Pulicat place was from 1609 to 1825, the most important Dutch settlement on the Coromandel coast. In the colonial period today still reminds the old Dutch cemetery. In addition, Pulicat is a starting point for bird sanctuary Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary of tourist interest.
